Autumn Years
BROKEN WING A friend of mine in his sixties was talking about his childhood and told me he was adopted at birth. Hold me he still feels a deep sadness that he's never known his birth mother. As he spoke, it struck me that he's wounded, like a bird with a broken wing. It inspired me to write this song. I was also inspired to write a second song, this time imagining a young mother forced to give up her newborn for adoption. That song is Forgive Me. It can be found here.
BROKEN WING LYRICS Think of you a lot these days, feels like picking scars At times I see your face - though I don’t know who you are Why did you abandon me, never wanted me enough Raise me as your child, would it been so tough Like a bird with a broken wing, can’t seem to fly And like a bird with a broken wing, won’t make the sky Though our life lines separate, pulling at my heart A pain you once let go, I kept from the start When I’m dreaming, for years gone by Undercover of darkness, I hang my head and cry Mum and dad adopted me, loving and so kind But I still feel the shame, ‘bout bein’ leave behind Like a bird with a broken wing, can’t seem to fly And like a bird with a broken wing, won’t make the sky Though our life lines separate, pulling at my heart A pain you once let go, I kept from the start
